“Dressage is like partner dancing—you may learn to follow the horse in his steps in the beginning—but later you must learn to lead with an educated seat, strong core and effective aids in order to keep him in a balance necessary for the higher levels. An educated horse on his hind legs, relaxed and submissive is a pleasure for any rider to lead. What is necessary to achieve this from our horses is where the real work lies. The reward to me in the end is simple—when you can build on his strengths, improve his weaknesses, and have him feel proud and powerful beneath you. It is the position on the podium that is secondary. Equally as satisfying is the pride and sense of accomplishment on the faces of my students sitting atop the product of such a horse.”
